KYLE DE BRUYN
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
01 about me
Hi, my name is Kyle De Bruyn and I'm a graphic designer. I specialize in illustrations and graphic design in general. I want to create impactful work through controversial topics and issues which evoke certain emotions and get people to think in unconventional ways. I would like to start an art gallery, to get my clothing manufactured, and to get my game and apps developed in the near future. I am a Pendoring finalist in the motion graphics award 2020.
02 portfolio-Animation design
I have created a mini animation called GRIM. The animation was designed to address some topics and stereotypes in and around our culture. It speaks about how people perceive where we come from and how we believe what they have been saying and are using it as an excuse not to do something productive. It shows us that we can do anything we set our mind to if we are not setting limitations for ourselves. Limitations that doesn't exist. It also speaks on the police brutality against not just blacks but coloureds as well hence the phrase BLM so does ours, and theirs. Voice over artist - Riyaaz Simaar. The animation has been selected for the final section in the motion graphics of the Pendoring Awards.

Poster design
We had to convey our utopia or our ideal world to an alien in a non-verbal way. We used symbolism to convey how we could communicate with the unknown being aliens by showing them what makes us human. The poster was designed around the phrase life is universal. We wanted to convey that we aren’t that different from aliens because we are both living organisms. We’re perceiving earth through the alien’s perspective, illustrated by the alien hand holding the magnifying glass towards the earth. The Baby in the center of the magnifying glass held by the alien hand represents birth and the magnified fingerprint in the background represents our identity after birth as humans. We used vines as a symbol for the tree of life, twirled around the magnifying glass creating peace, unity and also trying to make contact with the unknown acknowledging the existence of beings out there in the universe. We used an unconventional language called pigpen cipher with the phrase life is universal. The meaning of the phrase is to connect life with the universe, after all, we are in an ever-evolving and expanding universe so it’d be naive to think that we’re the only life in existence. Two fundamental illustrations illustrate the uniqueness of the human race and why we are so dominant on earth. Our heart, allows us to evoke certain emotions and without it, we wouldn’t be human just a bunch of machines or heartless computers. Our brain can think and solve problems that make us unique. With both a good heart and an innovative and creative mindset we can now build a solid foundation and create our perfect utopia. Magazine cover design
We were briefed on the concept of using the principals and elements of design to create an impactful magazine cover design that describes our culture. The idea was to use illustrations and text to convey a powerful message around the stigma of hair in different spaces and how we should have pride, be proud, and embrace our natural beauty. Respect our identity was the phrase used to convey a deep massage on the discrimination based on someone's hairstyle. It's not just a hairstyle it's our culture, our identity, our way of life, and expressionism.

Web design
Briefed with the task of designing a website with a positive message supported by a video and static imagery with a feel-good theme which is also the name of the website. The idea of the vlog is to spread positivity during the though time of the COVID 19 pandemic by having some fun perspectives from in-house family fun, to healthy meals, working hacks, DIY sessions, great hygiene tips, and what to avoid completely. Voice over artist - Riyaaz Simaar.

Editorial design
We were briefed with the concept of designing a cover, editorial page, contents page, and main article layout for Print and Digital publishing. I designed a minimalistic and simplistic Magazine design style that describes what the brand stands for. The brand I created is a mashup of the two words FUTURE + TRENDS = FUTRE. I was thinking of this concept as a designer and wanted to create something unique that keeps designers informed with the trends that are both in and out of season.
